Who are these tutorials for?

These tutorials are for the yoga teacher or yoga practitioner who wishes they had a comprehensive library of yoga asana tutorials to review on their own time from a teacher who shares yoga asana through a trauma-informed, Ayurveda-informed, and prana-focused lens.

Rooted in self-discovery, Haunani's focus is to remove some of the dogma around "correct alignment," "fullest expression," and perfectionism. She inspires you to create and find options for each body to experience the benefits of yoga asana with steadiness and ease.

In these videos, you'll find all the material you would cover in a 200 and 300-hour training. In each video you'll review the foundations for safety and steadiness, tips, techniques, benefits, contraindications (when not to use these techniques), chakra considerations, prana vayu, Ayurveda considerations, and teaching methodology with options in each of these videos to modify the posture.

Navigating these Tutorials - Begin Here!

This growing library is for you to learn more about each asana at your own time and pace. These tutorials are shared with love for you to explore, play, and maybe untangle some dogma about bodies in movement or asana.  While nothing in these videos are meant to be absolutes rights and wrongs, my focus is for you to discover options for yourself and others.

Ideally, I would be in person with you to answer your questions and we can see how different bodies move in, through, and out of these forms.  You can take what you learn here, apply it to your own practice, and apply it to your classes.

For each major movement category there is a FOUNDATIONS video that is listed first.  PLEASE WATCH THESE FIRST!!!!  These will provide an overall foundation for all the other asana/postures/forms in the section.  Without the foundational videos, you may be missing some key components.  And really, once you understand the foundations of certain movement categories, the detailed asana videos will just be reaffirming your understanding of finding personalized steadiness and ease.

In each asana tutorial video you'll cover:
  • Sanskrit & English name
  • History or stories (as applicable)
  • Category of the Spinal Movements
  • Chakra influences
  • Vayu influences
  • Ayurveda dosha influences
  • Cautions and contraindications (and why it might be a caution or contraindication)
  • Foundations of the Asana including the sthira and sukha components with body, breath, intention, dristhi
    • Entering the asana
    • Staying in the asana
    • Exiting the asana
  • Variations & Options including, props, chairs, and walls
  • Adjustments - not all videos will have adjustments, these are best learned in person.

As always, I'm  here for you and love learning from you.  Please add your comments, send me questions, and share your tips, techniques, and observations.   You can share those directly in the video's comments or email them to me.

Back Extensions / Purvatana Tutorials

Purvatana postures are also known as back extensions, back bends, or heart openers. Purva is Sanksrit for East, which relates to the front of our bodies or the side of the body that faces the rising or setting sun.  While the English translation of "back bend" or "back extension" brings our awareness to our backs and tells us the direction our spine is moving, an important action of these postures is the lengthening of the front body or east body.  Keep this in mind as you  move through these videos.

Please start by watching The Foundations of Inversions first.

"FALLING OUT OF INVERSIONS" is the perfect second video in this module to watch, especially if you have never done this in a workshop or training.  Not all inversions are balancing or challenging but when the are, we also need to know how to exit without hurting ourselves, as best we can.  This video will cover those techniques and tips.
